NEW AUSTRALIAN BOOK

Cover of SpeakNow

Exciting news about “Speak Now” a new Australian book on gay marriage that I have written a chapter for … it’s going to hit the bookstands and your e-readers in October 2011.

The blog about the book is now up and running here, thanks to the heroic editor of the book, Dr Victor Marsh:
http://speaknowaustralia.blogspot.com/

Australian activists such as Andrew Barr, Evelyn Gray and Rodney Croome, who have written for The Gay Marriage Blog are also contributing chapters amongst a stellar cast of 30 or so writers. This should make a great impact as debate around the Australian Labor Party conference heats up.

ONE YEAR, HALF A MILLION READERS !!

first birthday candle

Well, it’s been a busy year personally and with the blog, but I want to thank you all for helping this little platfrom get this far.

And it’s all good news:  across the blog itself and especially the Facebook page, your stories, the news, some videos, jokes, photos and more have been read almost 500,000 times.

We’re reaching people we never expected to reach too – some of the top viewing figures come from India, China and even Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan.

If you Google a prominent person like Penny Wong, now our post on her views on gay marriage will come up as one of the top results. Same if you put in “Kylie Minogue gay marriage” and many more.

Let’s try to get to a million in the second year.  Every person we motivate or inspire or comfort gets the world one step closer to the equality we believe in.

All our global readers can check the story out here. If you’re from Australia try to buy a copy of the magazine to support the cause, or read more about the magazine on their website (which unfortunately does not print the story)

AUSTRALIAN GAYS WAITING AT THE ALTAR

Was it a good or bad election for the nation’s million or so gays and lesbians? Here’s my verdict, published by the National Times today (a joint venture of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age).  It’s going strong with the most comments of all opinion pieces today.

The start could hardly have been worse. Tony Abbott felt threatened by us, a Family First candidate linked gay marriage to child abuse, and Penny Wong sounded weak in defending Labor’s policy against marriage equality. Things started to look up when Greens’ vocal ‘equal love’ campaign was rewarded with a record vote. When Andrew Wilkie tabled a conscience vote on marriage as a priority the picture looked even better. Now the Labor-Greens agreement now leaves gays waiting (hopefully) at the altar.

The way forward is clearning a conscience vote on a Private Members Bill – but let’s not kid ourselves how tough that campaign will be …

(UPDATE: Good news in that the Greens promise to re-introduce Marriage Equality bill on first day of Parliament.)

AUSTRALIAN GREENS MUST HOLD LINE

Gillard and Brown

For a while it seemed like a bad election for Australia’s million or so gays and lesbians. Tony Abbott felt threatened by us, a Family First candidate linked gay marriage to child abuse, and Penny Wong looked weak in toeing the party line against marriage. With the Greens now potentially holding the balance of power in both houses of Parliament gay marriage has never been closer to the political centre stage.

The question concerning supporters of marriage equality is whether the Greens will reward their faith while negotiating with Labor.  Is gay marriage a core promise, we wonder? Continue reading →

MAKE MY DAUGHTER EQUAL!

the family from Wollongong fighting to make both daughthers equal

My name is Evelyn. I live in Wollongong about 90 minutes south of Sydney. I’ve been married to Peter for 36 years and we have two daughters, Emily, 31, a lawyer and Sarah, 25, an accountant.

I grew up in England, and emigrated to Australia in 1973. I met my husband in 1968 while studying for a degree in Biological Sciences at university in the UK. I wanted to teach, so I completed a Diploma of Education in primary school teaching and taught in the north of England and in London for a year before making the move to Australia. We were among the last of those who were known as ‘ten pound Poms’, as that was the price we paid for the flight from England.  We came to Australia to join my parents and sisters who had emigrated here in 1971.

Peter and I had very simple wedding with family and the few friends that we’d made in the 11 months since our arrival in Australia. In was in a church (like everyone did in those days) in Wollongong, with a Pizza Hut shaped roof and the minister was happy for me to omit the ‘obey’ in the ceremony! I travelled to the church in my sister’s orange Datsun 120Y, with a plastic hand-held fan to stop my make-up melting in the heat! The reception that followed was in my parents’ rumpus room!

Peter and I like to think of our family as a very close one…. Continue reading →

HOW WOULD LABOR CABINET VOTE ON GAY MARRIAGE IN AUSTRALIA?

Australia's Labor Cabinet

Australia's Labor government

There has been a lot of fuss and discussion – and rightly so about these comments here from Penny Wong and Julia Gillard’s ‘personal view’ that marriage is between a man and a woman.  But  how would a re-elected Labor Cabinet actually vote on marriage equality if the issue were ever put to a vote?

The answer may surprise youand give strong hope of progress if we can get a real debate happening. Having dealt with most of these people in various capacities in the last 10 years, in my analysis there are Definite yes:  6, Probable yes: 5, Swinging: 3 Probable no: 7, Definite no: 0

TOTAL LEANING YES: 11  SWING: 3  TOTAL LEANING NO: 7 (full reasoning later in article)

How is this possible you might be wondering? Continue reading →
