TWISTED VALUES

Australian marriage celebrant Kirileigh Lynch

Equality supporting marriage celebrant Kirileigh Lynch

One very cool marriage celebrant wrote to me about the recent post Wedding Industry Finds Voice. Says Kirileigh Lynch of Sydney, Australia:

“I find being a marriage celebrant in Australia (where thanks to Phillip Ruddock we are required by law to state at each ceremony that marriage is the union of a man and a women) and a supporter of gay rights to be a tough double act. I hate that I have friends I cannot legally marry. I hate that for no good reason I am forced into discriminating against good, loving people.”

“I always ask the straight couples I marry if they would like me to include a small addition after the legal definition of marriage so that it reads: “Our law defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman, voluntarily entered into for life, to the exclusion of all others. (name of the couple) truly hope that one day this human right will be afforded to all loving couples.”

MAXIMUM SECURITY?

copyright - Mark, www.slapupsidethehead.com

Debates about marriage equality are at very different stages across the world – as this global map of marriage rights from the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) shows.

Did you know lesbians and more often gay men can be jailed for private sexual activities in more countries (78) than they can marry (10)?  That’s not the kind of maximum security we need.

WHEN WORDS AREN’T ENOUGH

Elton John and Ru Paul

Marriage / civil union / registered relationship … everyone has their preferred phrase. I obviously think marriage says the most, but sometimes you need more than a word to express a point.

Indeed there are quite a few songs about gay marriage now.

I knew about Ru Paul’s Love is Love, but nothing else.  You can even buy a full record called Marry Me at the link.

Please send links to other songs – especially in languages other than English!

IF SESAME STREET GETS IT …

… Then surely intelligent adults can be reasoned with over time. Good on Sesame Street for having this common sense.

A CIVIL RIGHT

Here’s my first favourite quote of the week. It’s from the United States Goodridge vs Department of Health case that brought marriage equality to Massachusetts.

“Marriage is a vital social institution. The exclusive commitment of two individuals to each other nurtures love and mutual support. Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family. Because it fulfils yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life’s momentous acts of self-definition.

“It is undoubtedly for these concrete reasons, as well as for its intimately personal significance, that civil marriage has long been termed a ‘civil right.’ Without the right to choose to marry, one is excluded from the full range of human experience.”
