PORTIA DEGENERES!

Portia DeRossi now Portia DeGeneres

One of the issues facing any engaged couple concerns one’s name.  It’s even trickier for gay couples – where a name change automatically outs you to everyone. And what about all those annoying questions like ‘which one of you is the man, and which one is the woman?’

So it’s interesting and refreshing to see Amanda Rogers, later Portia de Rossi decide to become Portia Degeneres. Amanda was running away from her emerging sexual orientation in suburban Australia when she first changed her name.  Now she is running to it with this latest petition for a new name.

WHEN THE DRESS DOESN’T FIT

Are you an Ellen or a Portia?… the answer might determine if you can find the right clothes for your big day.

It seems the market is not adjusting so quickly to the fact that not every woman wants to get married in a dress.

DON’T STOP TALKING

Being an Aussie, you will probably see a reasonable amount of Australian material on here, even though the site is dedicated to global perspectives. Like this quote from Portia de Rossi, the Australian actress, lesbian and wife of Ellen DeGeneres:

I won’t stop talking until equality is achieved and there’s nothing left to talk about.

That’s the spirit behind this blog. This debate is at very different stages across the world – as this global map of marriage rights shows – and we all need to be working together to move it forward.

The problems of people in Australia, Asia, Africa, the Americas are your problems too. And every person fighting for new attitudes and laws could potentially learn from another on the other side of the world.

So keep talking about this even when you win equality for yourself – and keep listening too.

KIDS DRIVING VISIBILITY AND ACCEPTANCE

Gay marriage

Mistress Karina | MySpace Vidéo

This is a great example of students coming up with some great insights that the rest of us might overlook – in this video they show the importance of visibility and role models in showing lesbian and gay kids and the wider community that gay marriage is about commitment and love and nothing else.
