UK CRAWLS TO EQUALITY

boris johnson london mayor

So London mayor Boris Johnson, the affable posh Conservative man that everyone loves to love, has used London Pride to come out in support of marriage equality. This is hot on the heels of Lynn Featherstone, the UK equalities Minister giving the OK for religious symbols and properties to be used in civil partnership ceremonies.  If that is not marriage in all but name, I do not know what is.

The funny thing is that the UK seemed so progressive in 2005 when Tony Blair introduced civil partnerships. Now even the Conservative Party basically thinks that is a backward position.  Maybe UK will be the first to prove that agreeing to a civil partnership legal compromise does not necessarily halt progress towards full equality; Irelqnd zill be an interesting second test case in this regard. Let us hope that the UK and Ireland do not stall as it has been the case in Denmark, New Zealand and several US states. Your thoughts?

WHEN WAS THE FIRST GAY MARRIAGE?

I tend to think same sex marriage started in 1989 in Denmark, when full legislative equality was delivered to same sex couples who wanted to enter into a ‘official registered partnership.’  (I will shortly feature on here the first gay couple and first lesbian couple to be married under these laws).

But whether you think modern gay marriage started in Denmark in 89 or the Netherlands in 2001 … that’s a big leap from the first gay unions which probably took place in Ancient Rome.  With Emperors like Elagabalus marrying their chariot driver (Hierocles), and declaring:

“[I am] delighted to be called the mistress, the wife, the Queen of Hierocles”

… well, it’s hard to marriage equality today as an unprecedented step towards hell.
