HOW THE TORIES CAME AROUND

David Cameron on the cover of Attitude

If you were surprised that David Cameron, conservative British Prime Minister, has decided to “emphatically support” full gay marriage being introduced in Britain by 2015, you have the facts both for you and against you.

In many ways, Cameron’s conversion is the conversion of millions who have been exposed to the arguments and to gay friends and colleagues over a prolonged period. The change is also special given how far his party has come – putting it well ahead of parties like the centre-left Australian Labor Party, for example.

You can read a detailed account of the Conservative troubled history with gay rights, gay people, and homophobia in “Tory Pride and Prejudice” by Michael McManus.

UK INCHES TOWARDS EQUALITY

Another day, another step. The junior partners in the UK Coalition Government will today vote to support full marriage equality. The Conservative senior coalition partners are open to but noncommittal about marriage law changes.

With David Cameron thinking about equality and others like Arnold Schwarzenegger and heavily Catholic Argentina and Portugal taking the equality leap, it makes the position of self-styled human rights champions like the Australian Labor Government and the secular French presidency quite ridiculous.

Why on earth are they prepared to give up this political space?

TORIES HUGGING GAYS?

UK Conservatives leader David Cameron

An interesting development in the UK election campaign.   The traditionally right-wing Conservative party are now using explicitly gay-friendly language to promote support for gay marriages in their election campaigning.

Asked about why he planned to introduce a ‘married couples’ tax break, the Conservative’s candidate for Prime Minister, David Cameron is bluntly saying gay civil unions are included:  “I really believe in families and marriage and civil partnerships,” Cameron says.

They’re now even engaging with Peter Tatchell (a neat stunt), saying they would be “happy to consider the case for gay marriage” and tweeting about reversing past injustices. The real test will be what happens if they win.
