THIS TORY ISN’T NORMAL

Homohobic Tory candidate Philip Lardner

The Weird Homophobe

Hmm … wanting to be open-minded I posted a story two weeks back titled ‘Tories Hugging Gays?’, about the UK Conservative opposition party getting modern.  The leader is modern, yes.  But even the next rung down – his parliamentary candidates – have a habit of being medieval on issues like marriage equality and the alleged gay  ‘lifestyle’.  Witness this quote, which promptly got Phillip Lardner sacked as a candidate (he was also previously suspended from the party for racism):

“Homosexuality is not normal behaviour… as your MP I will support the rights of parents and teachers to refuse to have their children taught that homosexuality is ‘normal’ behaviour or an equal lifestyle choice to traditional marriage.” Continue reading →

TORIES HUGGING GAYS?

UK Conservatives leader David Cameron

An interesting development in the UK election campaign.   The traditionally right-wing Conservative party are now using explicitly gay-friendly language to promote support for gay marriages in their election campaigning.

Asked about why he planned to introduce a ‘married couples’ tax break, the Conservative’s candidate for Prime Minister, David Cameron is bluntly saying gay civil unions are included:  “I really believe in families and marriage and civil partnerships,” Cameron says.

They’re now even engaging with Peter Tatchell (a neat stunt), saying they would be “happy to consider the case for gay marriage” and tweeting about reversing past injustices. The real test will be what happens if they win.
