TIL COURT DO US PART …

Mark and Dante

Mark and Dante - no longer married, or were they ever?

So the now famous Texan Skype e-Marriage is a bust.  So says  the Superior Court for the District of Columbia, home of the America’s capital city.

It’s a digital world and well as an unequal one – there is no way this will be the end of the e-Marriage court wars, I assure you.

Stay tuned for more test cases and more thwarted happiness.

SKYPE GAY WEDDING

Skype has achieved many things in its short lifespan …. But I am not sure that even they would have expected to count gay and lesbian equality among them. All that changed this week when Mark Reed and Dante Walkup, a Texan couple, were legally married in Washington DC using the digital voice and video technology.

Witness to the ceremony Jay Morris blogs about it here, as does the tech website Gizmodo has more as does
Andrew Sullivan has more

500 GAY MARRIAGES AND COUNTING IN ARGENTINA

What a lovely way to celebrate Pride – Argentina was able to do that the same week that the 500th same sex wedding took place.
500 marriages in just three months is a great start.  Just the beginning for Argentina and the rest of Latin America!

RAISE YOUR GLASSES TO PINK POWER

The singer Pink is a big supporter of gay marriage

The singer Pink is a big supporter of gay marriage

The best friend of the singer Pink is gay, and was married in the singer’s yard.  Listen to what happened next here. Listen to the song “Raise Your Glass” here.

Her new single “Raise Your Glass,” is based on the experience. The music video for the song is also based at a gay wedding.

“I threw my best friend’s wedding in my backyard — [she] is gay and she married her wife, and it was absolutely beautiful. At the end of it, her mom said, ‘Why can’t this be legal?’ and started crying. It was just the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen, so that’s why I’m doing it in my video. “

GERMANY’S FOREIGN MINISTER WEDS

Guido Westerwelle and Michael Mronz

This surely counts as the most important same sex wedding ever by a politician. Iceland may have a lesbian head of state, but Germany is a far more powerful country.  Congratulations to German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Michael Mronz, a sporting events organizer, who wed this weekend.

True, this is a “social union” not a full marriage – but the point is it’s still important. That gay weddings are normal, happy-free affairs that don’t wreck communities or other marriages, but instead enhance all of us. I wish they had offered us more insight into the ceremony, but I guess that keeping it private reinforces the message that this is no different from the thousands of opposite-sex marriages that took place this weekend in Germany

In Germany the Life Partnership Act of 2001 allows “registered partnerships” for same-sex couples, which provide most of the legal benefits of marriage.

Asif Khan, 30, a Muslim from Ahmedabad has held an unofficial wedding with longtime Hindu partner Sanjiv Sha, 42, a UK citizen of Indian origin (names changed). The couple was blessed by a Hindu priest at a ceremony arranged by Nepal’s pioneering Blue Diamond Society.

“I was worried for the safety of my partner and thought Nepal is a safe destination. We now look forward to a happy future,” said Sha, according to the Hindustan Times

In December 2007, Nepal’s Supreme Court granted equal status to sexual minorities, and the parliament is now finalising arrangements for same sex marriages.

Prince of Rajpipla, Manvendra Singh Gohil, who’s popular as India’s Gay Prince is also planning his wedding in Nepal.

LATEST GAY WEDDING EXPERIENCE

It’s time to check in with my favourite gay couple blogging team at The Gay Wedding Experience.

If you ever wondered if gay weddings were like straight ones, this blog gives you the answer ….  a big fat yes.  Sometimes these boys take it a bit too far – the result being the Brian has actually been ordered on a holiday by his husband-to-be and therapist.  But that’s what you get when you get too worked up about colour-coding the ceremony’s parasols!
