SURE THERE’S SEX IN THE CITY — BUT WHAT ABOUT GAY MARRIAGE

New York City is a place where anything can happen – and usually does. But for all the Sex in That City, and no matter how many times Rudy Giulani dresses in drag, the lawmakers are strangely reluctant to get with the equality programme of the people, the Mayor, and a whole host of others.

Andrew Cuomo made a great start to being the Democratic nominee for NY Governor – tweeting that he would bring marriage equality to New York. All the Sex and the City ladies are lashing out at the backwardness of it all (see video).

WEDDING INDUSTRY FINDS VOICE

Wedding Industry for Equality (WIFE) logo

The ‘wedding industry’ doesn’t seem to worry much about the moral or economic effects of same sex couples being excluded from it.

You’d think collectively all the caterers and photographers and dress-makers and stationery suppliers would want to increase their markets.  And you’d think that the many queer people in the industry would speak up a bit more about their observer status in this crucial institution.

Some people are making a useful stand.   J&J photography from New York run by Jared and Jeanne Slater (a straight couple) are offering 44% discounts to same sex couples in recognition of the 44 states where they can’t get married. They say: “We will charge gay couples the same rate as straight couples when they are given the same rights.”

Wedding Industry For Equality (WIFE) is a another great American initiative, open to everyone, started by photographer Robin Roemer.
