HOW THE TORIES CAME AROUND

David Cameron on the cover of Attitude

If you were surprised that David Cameron, conservative British Prime Minister, has decided to “emphatically support” full gay marriage being introduced in Britain by 2015, you have the facts both for you and against you.

In many ways, Cameron’s conversion is the conversion of millions who have been exposed to the arguments and to gay friends and colleagues over a prolonged period. The change is also special given how far his party has come – putting it well ahead of parties like the centre-left Australian Labor Party, for example.

You can read a detailed account of the Conservative troubled history with gay rights, gay people, and homophobia in “Tory Pride and Prejudice” by Michael McManus.

RELIGIOUS YOUTH SUPPORT EQUALITY

PRRI Views on Selected Gay & Lesbian Issues by age

Views on Selected Gay & Lesbian Issues by age. Source: PRRI

Well, well, this is a positive development. The United States’ Public Religion Research Institute today released “Generations at Odds: The Millennial Generation and the Future of Gay and Lesbian Rights,” a report into what todays teens and 20-somethings in the US think about us.

62% of American youth favor marriage equality, including 49% of those identifying as Republican and 44% of those who think of themselves as Evangelical.  In the last category that means the youth are four times more to support equality than senior Evangelicals.

This is what they call a snowball effect, ladies and gentlemen.

(Interestingly more Catholics think the Church’s approach to gays is too extreme than think it is “about right.”)

ANIMAL MARRIAGE IN NEW YORK

Rose Marie Belforti

Rose Marie Belforti

Which bit of that headline doesn’t look right? None or all, according to New York Town clerk Rose Marie Belforti who has decided she can’t issue same sex marriage licences because the wording “spouse” could lead to animals marrying their owners / gay lovers.

Interesting article here in which Ms / Mrs Belforti seems to confuse her job as a town clerk with her Christian beliefs. No, Mrs Belforti, God isn’t the final word unless you happen to live in an isolated convent. For everyone else, there is the law and daily courtesies for fellow human beings.

MORE TOXIC DEBATE IN OZ

bob-katter

Thankfully this fool is not propping up the Australian Government (as with two other independent MPs) … otherwise we’d have extra reason to be worried at the awful comments of Independent Member of Parliament Bob Katter at an anti-equality rally in Canberra where conservative American commentator, Rebecca Hagelin, said same-sex marriage will lead to marriages between paedophiles and children, and Katter said the idea of same-sex marriages “deserves to be laughed at and ridiculed”.

Australian Marriage Equality spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said offensive rhetoric has no place in the same-sex marriage debate and called on the Australian Christian Lobby and Australian Family Association, who organised the rally, to distance themselves from the comments. ”Along with other independent MPs, Bob Katter will attend a charity dinner with same-sex partners in Parliament House later this year, and they will remind him why marriage equality is about some of the most serious things in life like love, commitment and family, and is definitely no laughing matter.”
The comments at today’s rally were also condemned as “damaging” by Queensland psychologist, Paul Martin, who is an expert in the mental health of same-sex attracted young people. ”Prejudice and ridicule damage the mental health of young same-sex attracted people and the last thing they need to hear are these kinds of offensive comments from people who purport to represent ‘family values’.”
Meanwhile, Australian Marriage Equality today released an opinion poll conducted by Galaxy research which found that 53% of Australian Christians believe same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. The Christians 4 Equality webform and a list of clergy endorsing equality can be found here:

LEADING U.S. CONSERVATIVE BACKFLIPS

David Frum

David Frum

Very interesting and gratifying piece here on CNN by David Frum, a man more often associated with inventing Republican catch-cries like the “axis of evil.”

My favorite line, where he tells conservatives to go find another cause for family instability in the U.S.

“Whatever is driving this negative trend, it seems more than implausible to connect it to same-sex marriage. How would it even work that a 15-year-old girl in Van Nuys, California, becomes more likely to have a baby because two men in Des Moines, Iowa, can marry?”

THANK YOU, NEW YORK TIMES

Judge Vaughn Walker

Thank heavens a really serious publication has had the guts to take this up.

The idea that Judge Vaughn Walker (republican, experienced etc) was not able to rule on the flimsy Prop 8 case (by that I mean the very strong appeal), on the basis of being gay and in a relationship is absurd.  As the Times says, what next? Women can’t judge rape cases?

These people are fools who insult the notion of justice.

TIME TO FIGHT AUSTRALIAN CHRISTIAN LOBBY

Jim Wallace, professional fool, Australian Christian Lobby

The Australian Christian Lobby is proving itself to be another one of those ‘astro-turf’ organisations that, like the National Organisation for Marriage in the United States, does nothing but press politicians to blur the separate of church and state and harass minorities.

Their leader, Jim Wallace, chose Australia’s ANZAC day (a veteran’s day) to announce that he thinks that Australian soldiers didn’t fight two World Wars to let “gay marriage and Islamic” (sic) take over his country.

This fool made it worse by then apologising for having a negative impact on “the day” after his Tweet predictably sparked outrage.  No apology for the gays or the Muslims he offended then.

Sorry I was so slow to bring you the news – I was actually at the battlefields in France (Villers Bretonneux) commemorating the dead.  So I guess that goes to show how incompatible gays and Australian values are!

You can call or text Wallace’s spokesperson here: Katherine Spackman +61 (0)408 875 979. You can call the Australian Christian Lobby on: +61 (02) 6259 0431

FACEBOOK COLLAPSE FOR ANTI-GAY GROUP

Facebook logo

One of the most amusing lessons for “astro-turf” anti-gay groups has to be that if you built up a mountain of hate based on not much, then you can lose your mountain pretty quickly too.

That’s what happened to the 290,000 strong contact list and community built up by Louis Marinelli over the last five years. He changed sides and took his 290,000 Facebook fans with him. Now they are all disconnected from each other, and may even be reflecting on their views just as Marinelli forced himself to do. NOM certainly has no way to contact them and whip up further fear and hate.

Looking at it from the other side: I’ve never met a person who changes their mind after they decideare for gay marriage and then changes their mind. I don’t think you’ll see us transferring any large Facebook groups, or any other groups, to the anti-equality side.

BEST BACKFLIP EVER: N.O.M. STRATEGIST NOW SUPPORTS EQUALITY

I love this.  Louis J Marinelli set up a Facebook page for the US “National Organisation for Marriage” (NOM) that generated so much anti-gay hate that it made him change his mind! That’s right, a key NOM strategist is so turned off by his own supporters that’s he’s joined our side (you may remember him from Facebook’s largest anti marriage equality page: “Marriage: one man, one woman”)

“I began to understand why the gay community was out there claiming opposition to same-sex civil marriage was all about hate. I soon realized that there I was surrounded by hateful people.”

Here’s a further expose from Marinelli about NOM’s faked levels of grassroots support.
