TAIWAN MASS GAY WEDDING

Taiwan lesbian couples

80 lesbian couples have tied the knot in an unofficial celebrations that was completed without police interference or protests, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation

I’ve seen reports of a fair few mass wedding in Asia – usually led by Moonies! – but this is first mass lesbian wedding party I’ve ever heard of in Asia. And apparently more than 1000 people PAID to watch it happen.

But it is not that surprising given that Taiwan has the largest gay pride celebrations in Asia. Taiwan has also had the tantalising prospect of a draft marriage equality bill since 2003.  Unlike many countries it was not drafted by a lone liberal or left-wing politican / party, but by the advisers of the Cabinet.  This bill is the first in Asia to promise marriage and adoption rights to gay couples.

Organisers say the event gives them hope that the island will soon legalise gay marriage, but the Taiwanese President Ma Ying-Jeou says there needs to be “consensus” before such legislation can move forward.

MASS GAY MASS WEDDING IN PHILLIPINES

An MCC service

I love confusing headlines!… but seriously, BAGUIO CITY, Philippines will be home to a huge same sex mass wedding event this weekend.

It’s the first event of its kind, and will not be legal unfortunately, but following on from a similar legal event in the US last month, it should raise the profile of the local marriage equality campaign. It is our friends at the Metropolitan Community Church who are once again behind the activism, and the weddings will coincide with the 5th Baguio LGBT Pride parade.

The group will be holding ecumenical worship and mass wedding for same-sex couples for free and to be witnessed by the public in a venue to be announced later.

Somewhat bizarrely the church is requiring that wedding couples have been in a steady loving relationship for more than eight months. Why eight months I wonder?

THE BEST ARGUMENT AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE …

Kenji Yoshini

… And why it fails.

This is a great article by Kenji Yoshini, a New York University (NYU) professor who wrote an amazing book called “Covering” a few years back. My boyfriend studied under him at NYU and raves about him, and I have to admit the book was such a sophisticated take on how gays float between being out and not, that I crave anything he now publishes.

Enjoy!

WILL YOU GO ALL OUT TOO?

This is going to be HUGE!
Like this blog on a scale of one million to one.
We all need to work together and to help each other. None of us is really free, and can sleep with a totally clean conscience until all of us is free.
I am very excited for old friend Jeremy Heimans and the wonderful team from Purpose that are building this global movement

MALAYSIA’S FIRST “IT GETS BETTER” VIDEO

This is so, so important and courageous.  In a country where even a former Deputy Prime Minister has been jailed in the last decade for sodomy, there needs to be messages like this so there can be hope. So that one day there can be a possibility of a normal and happy life for all the gay and lesbian people in Malaysia now denied it.

Here is Gabrielle – outed in the media, attempting suicide, friends with people who are victims of ‘corrective rape’… but ultimately a story of a family who changed their mind and a brave women who struggled on to something better.

This story is exactly why need marriage equality; the lack of role models, the lack of people to talk to is devastating.

16 MILLION GAY-STRAIGHT MARRIAGES IN CHINA

Wow! That’s all I can say. It’s obvious when one does the math, but still, it sometimes takes and expert to point it out before you take the issue as seriously as it should be taken.

See full story here from UPI

At a guess some of these are mutually convenient marriages, where both parties knowingly get what they want.  But the vast majority are unions of suffering – where one party is being duped and the family will suffer. Still, some battle on strongly: says Shu Yun, 28, the wife of a gay man,  “The world is complicated. Every wife has her own concerns.”

THE GROOMS WORE BLACK …

Ashley and Glenn Anderson-Buick

Another heart warming and heart wrenching story here of committed Australians marrying abroad …

“The grooms wore black suits, no ties. It was an intimate affair with just 12 guests. Lake Ontario glistened in the background as Ashley and Glenn Anderson-Buick were married. Random onlookers congratulated them. ”Where’s the bride?” asked a homeless man who had watched the exchange of vows. Ashley pointed to his new husband, who was offered 50 cents as a wedding present…. INDIA: MARRIAGES COLLAPSE AS TRUTH COMES OUT

gay couple from India

Fascinating story here from EDGE Boston, based on local Indian news reports, about the increasing visibility of gays and lesbians in India.

One  consequence is that more sham marriages are ending, and people who thought they were happily heterosexually married are finding out the truth about their partners

IRAN: PUTTING MARRIAGE IN PERSPECTIVE

gay men being hanged iran

two gays hanged in Iran

This very interesting story by Lisa Daftari does give us pause for reflection.

I think that one can (indeed should) campaign for marriage equality in places of relative prosperity and acceptance, but at the same time we cannot forget the situation of people facing far greater threats to their safety and happiness.

Iran is a case in point.  If you support gay marriage, you also need to support Iranian gays. And if you can do something practical to raise awareness or funds for people in situations like this, then please do!

(Interesting viewers in Iran constituted the 10th largest group viewing this blog in one recent month – it shows there is also an interest in this issue even in places where marriage equality is far, far from reality)

Asif Khan, 30, a Muslim from Ahmedabad has held an unofficial wedding with longtime Hindu partner Sanjiv Sha, 42, a UK citizen of Indian origin (names changed). The couple was blessed by a Hindu priest at a ceremony arranged by Nepal’s pioneering Blue Diamond Society.

“I was worried for the safety of my partner and thought Nepal is a safe destination. We now look forward to a happy future,” said Sha, according to the Hindustan Times

In December 2007, Nepal’s Supreme Court granted equal status to sexual minorities, and the parliament is now finalising arrangements for same sex marriages.

Prince of Rajpipla, Manvendra Singh Gohil, who’s popular as India’s Gay Prince is also planning his wedding in Nepal.
