Afficher Map of gay marriage supporters in the Australian Labor Party sur une carte plus grande
This is a confidential phone poll conducted by Sky News Australia, see reportage of it here. – 22 in favour, 7 against, 9 refused to answer, one undecided.
It is the latest of a string of small pieces of good news emerging from the Australian Labor party. 22 of 39 Labor MPs is the largest group of supporters yet identified. Labor is also supporting the motion for MPs to actively seek their constituents views on equality.
The key point here is that there is definitely a growing movement of support. It is simply very tentative, and many MPs do not want to risk bringing down their fragile government with a divisive debate on the issue. That is no reason to stop pushing: but we do have to understand where MPs are in their thinking if we want them to change that thinking.
Yet more good words today from Labor MPs who are gradually finding their voice. Take Graham Perrett (MP for Moreton) for example: “I have two gay brothers and gay cousins and to oppose same-sex marriage doesn’t sit in my gut as being the right thing to do”.
There are more than 100 MPs and Senators from Labor, so this latest survey is still only a snapshot, and most clearly are not prepared to go public with a face to their views. It is Slowly, slowly, but the direction is all progress!
