Slovenia is the richest and possibly the prettiest of all the ex-Communist countries in Europe. Soon it may be the most equal.
Having successfully avoided the Balkan wars of the 1990s and achieved EU membership in 2004. Slovenia offered registered partnerships to same sex couples from 2006 and now the centre-left Slovenian Government has gotten a bill legalising same-sex ‘marriage’ and adoption through the first of three readings in Parliament.
Ongoing parliamentary hearings are causing a stir amongst right-wingers … perhaps a sign of immiment progress.
If you are Slovenian you can email Ms. Andreja Crnak Meglic, Chairwoman, Labor, Family and Social Issues Committee to express your support for equality.
If approved finally marriage equality is expected to enter into force on 1 May 2011
