More news on the gay couple in Malawi, who were jailed in December after they staged a public engagement ceremony in defiance of the country’s strict anti-gay laws.
After being subjected to forced anal examinations to confirm sodomy charges, ongoing detention without conviction, a humiliating public trial and illness in custody, Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga have sent messages mataining their belief in marriage and gay equality to activists in London.
The couple, who face 14 years in jail for homosexuality, have been adopted by Amnesty International as prisoners of conscience.
The couple’s messages – sent to the uber-activist Peter Tatchell in London – thank supporters for their financial aid and committing to keep up their fight.
Steven says: “We have come a long way and even if our family relatives are not happy, I will not and never stop loving Tiwonge.”
Tiwonge says: “I love Steven so much. If people or the world cannot give me the chance and freedom to continue living with him as my lover, then I am better off to die here in prison. Freedom without him is useless and meaningless.”
Despite being convicted of nothing the pair have been denied bail, in theory under laws against homosexuality that include penalties of up to 14 years in jail.
